Konami is a popular publisher to begin with, but nothing draws a huge crowd to the Konami area faster than a new Metal Gear Solid trailer. What crazy new things will Kojima show us next? While many of the recent Metal Gear Solid trailers and videos have been somewhat silly, this latest addition is serious, deadly serious.
A brand new 15 minute trailer was shown for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The theme of the video was that “War Has Changed”. It seems in the wake of the Manhattan disaster at the end of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, wars have begun to be fought more and more by Private Mercenary Companies or PMCs. It seems several of these companies are under a single dummy corporation titled Outer Heaven. Long time veterans of the series will recognize that as the dream of Big Boss, a world that will always need soldiers. The leader of this organization appears to be Liquid Snake still channeling himself through Ocelot - a relationship referred to in the video as Liquid Ocelot.
In addition to this plot overview, we are given glimpses into several other elements of the game. Many characters from the original Metal Gear Solid are making a return, including Naomi Hunter, Meryl Silverburgh, and Roy Cambell. That’s assuming that it’s really Roy Campbell. Remember, Roy Campbell technically never showed up in Metal Gear Solid 2. Otacon also will of course be returning.
Many old faces are returning, but Snake takes center stage. The trailer seems to confirm that Snake is aging at an accelerated rate. The exact cause is unclear, though the popular theory is that it is because Snake is a clone.
As usual, Kojima’s trademark wit makes its presence felt. During one scene we are tricked into thinking Snake has again utilized his trademark cardboard box hiding technique, when in fact the box contains nothing but watermelons. Snake is actually hiding nearby. It seems Snake’s new body suit has the ability to match any background, effectively camoflauging him.
The real twists were yet to come, however. Near the end of the trailer, we are shown a very distressing scene of Solid Snake holding a gun in his mouth, quite ready to pull the trigger. While we never see if he does it or not, one final surprise is yet to come.
The final shots of the video are of a slender, silver-haired man slicing the crap out of a very large groups of the mechs we saw earlier. It appears Raiden is back, through somewhat changed. This is not the girly Raiden we remember from Metal Gear Solid 2. This is a much darker Raiden. Perhaps the whiny brat many came to loath has finally grown up enough to bear the weight of Main Character. Here’s hoping. |
