Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney’s popularity was a surprise of Brain Age-sized proportions. Though, when you really stop and think about it, it sort of makes sense considering our country’s morbid fascination with anything related to the law. Lawyer shows are some of the top-rated shows on TV, there’s a 24 hour cable network that follows trials and, whenever a celebrity goes to trial, it takes top billing in the media.

Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations is the third game in the series. The game features five brand new cases that begin five years before the original. You play as Mia Fey, Phoenix’s mentor who kicked the bucket early into the first game, only to come back as a ghost and possess her little sister, Maya, and a little girl named Pearl. Mia is a rookie attorney who finds herself embroiled in a case where Phoenix is accused of murder. The game will also introduce a new prosecutor, Godot, whose appearance… well, I’ll just let you look at the screen and see for yourself. Other cases will take place in the present and fill in holes between the first two games.

The game will use the same mechanics as previous games. You begin each case with a general overview of the crime and take a side in it. From there, you investigate crime scenes, question witnesses and look for evidence. Once you’ve done your leg work, you’ll enter the trial stage where you examine and cross-examine witnesses and try to find flaws in their testimony.

Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations goes to trial in October.
