The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the name of the next game on your “must have” list.
Unveiled during Nintendo’s press conference last week at E3, Skyward Sword is taking a huge step for the franchise. This will be the first all-motion controlled Zelda game for the Wii and will fully utilize the offerings of Wii MotionPlus.
During this adventure, Link is a native of a wonderful city in the sky. One day, he hears of a magical kingdom far below the clouds and a mystical princess that lives there. Link, being the silent, gung-ho type, leaves his sky city and travels to this new land full of monsters, dungeons, and (presumably) great evil. Link’s trusty steel, The Skyward Sword, points to his home city in order to charge up for more powerful attacks and will most likely have some connection to the Master Sword.
With the adoption of the Wii MotionPlus accessory, Skyward Sword tracks players’ movements in real-time with a true 1:1 feel. Players will swing their arms to swing Link’s sword and aim at the screen for slingshot and bow attacks. Most of the gameplay concepts that are present in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword were originally conceived in Wii Sports Resort. Enemies will actively try to defend themselves from Link’s sword attacks, so swinging the sword at the perfect angle, like “Swordplay” in Sports Resort, is crucial to defeating the creatures of the new land. Firing Link’s bow is identical to “Archery” from last year’s sports game as well.
The biggest change to the franchise is the new art style. Blending the grown-up aspects of Twilight Princess with the colorful and whimsical tone of Wind Waker, Skyward Sword creates a fresh new take on the Zelda universe as it attempts to draw in new players.
The only downside is that the new game will not be available until 2011. Rest assured that we will have it covered when it comes out next year.
