Storytime With Kinect

Double Fine Productions has been known to make quite a few off-beat games in the past, but this year they are trying something even more different than normal, Sesame Street.

With Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, two players will work together with the Xbox 360 Kinect in order to solve various problems across several storybooks. The game is designed not only to allow parents to play alongside their kids, but also to be played in concise segments that allow the parent to decide just how long the child should play. According to the game’s demonstrator, each story book takes about 40 minutes to go through, but within that, there are many mini-games that will take only a few minutes to get past.

The basic premise of the game is that Cookie Monster and Elmo are traveling through the different storybooks and you help them solve their various problems. In the storybook I played, we were trying to help a sad monster become friends with a smaller group of creatures. The problem is, he is a bit misunderstood. In order to gain his friendship, we mimicked his actions and struck various poses when he wanted us to.

After gaining his trust, we learned of his problem and the fact that he just wanted some new friends. When Elmo and the Cookie Monster pointed out how gloomy his tree looked, we started catching fireflies to help light up the area. Smaller bugs are caught just by touching them, while bigger ones actually required grabbing onto them with both hands.

Overall, Once Upon a Monster seems to be a lot of fun, and requires a whole lot of energy. This should be great for the game’s target audience since many parents will be looking for ways to keep their kids entertained and moving, with the hopes of tiring them out before bed, of course.
