Marked

Publisher: DAW Books, Inc.

The premise of Marked sounded interesting to me: a socially awkward, loner-type police detective with an unhealthy affinity for her classic sports car. Oh, and the power to travel into the past to solve crimes in the present. What's not to like? Detective Dana Rohan's power doesn't seem to be tech-based, but is part of her. Is it magical? Genetic? Who's to say? She was adopted and knows nothing about her birth family, so she's tried to make the best of her ability, while keeping it (and the freakishly large and intricate tattoo she's had since before she was adopted) a secret from everyone.

Detective Rohan's life is upset when her mother dies, dredging up sadness and regret that she had avoided dealing with when her father passed away. Now, she finds herself feeling very alone and has a hard time letting her partner, Detective Jacob Hightower, in. What's worse, Jessica Wheadon, a lawyer from the Justice Department, has come to investigate Dana's stellar conviction rate, which will be difficult to explain, since she's unlikely to accept "magic time travel" as a good explanation.

Everything falls apart, however, when she's assaulted by a crazy guy on the street, who then gets killed by someone in armor. Who then disappears. Dana is holding the man in her arms when he dies, which is why she was able to see that he had a tattoo like hers. At that moment, Dana's world changes, forever, and she has a lot to learn... and quickly... if she hopes to survive.

From there on (okay, before that point, I guess) - Dana's life is an adventure and S. Andrew Swann takes us along for the ride. And what a ride it is. There are elements of science fiction, time travel, multiverse theory, magic and a touch of zombiism thrown in, to boot. However, I was surprised at just how well thought out everything is. As "out there" as things get, the reasoning and explanations fit the ever-expanding world and seem mechanically sound. In other words, as we learn more about Dana's world, everything in the world supports the new things we find out, making everything that happens seem plausible.

I'm not going to ruin or reveal anything. That would be a disservice. I will say, however, that I not only enjoyed this book and found it to be a hard to put down page-turner with an ending that wrapped up the story, while leaving lots of room for further adventures, but this is currently the book I've read that I would recommend curling up with, whether it's a rainy day, you're snowed in, or you're unwinding after a day at the beach. If you like Fantasy, magic or time-traveling detectives, this is a no-brainer. Must read.
