  • Brand-New Retrospective Featurette Including Interviews With Jeph Loeb And Simone Bianchi

Marvel Knights Animation Presents: Wolverine Versus Sabretooth brings one of the biggest events in Wolverine's story to life in that way that only Marvel Knights Animation can. The original comic was written by TV and film screenwriter, Jeph Loeb and his story was complemented by the unique artwork of Simone Bianchi. Like all Marvel Knights Animation films, this isn't just a reinterpretation of their comic, it is the original artwork animated with the addition of music and voiceactors.

Wolverine Versus Sabretooth takes place during the time in the Marvel Universe when all but a hundred or so mutants were depowered. With most of the remaining mutants congregating at Xavier's school, and two of those remaining mutants being Wolverine and Sabretooth, it isn't surprising that the two would clash claws yet again.

Wolverine takes the initiative by barging into the mansion and throwing Sabretooth out into the snow, but Sabretooth is quick to recover and the pair slash and bite their way across many landscapes. It seems that there is a bit more going on than simply an old grudge finally reaching its conclusion. Wolverine has been having odd dreams that seem to span all time. He seems to remember a race of dog-like creatures fighting and clashing with each other, all under the supervision of some leader that appears to be immortal. Wolverine keeps having visions of a blond and a black wolf-creature squaring off in the Stone Age, during the Roman Empire and other points in time, and while he sees the parallels between him and Sabretooth, he also sees that this one leader character is the same one watching the fights in all of his dreams.

Wolverine and Sabretooth deal a lot of damage to each other, but Wolverine gets the feeling that his long-time foe is holding something back. Wolverine not only tells the reader about his first encounter with the savage creature, but he also starts to get new memories from his time in WWII. When the pair end up in Wakanda under the supervision of The Black Panther and Storm, they find out that they were brought there (despite their injuries) because of a mystery that Black Panther's people have found. It seems there is the possibility that homosapiens weren't the only ancient race to gain sentience and this other wolf-like race might be the source of the many feral mutants that are prominent in the world. Not only do Wolverine and Sabretooth fit into this category, but so do other mutants like Wild Child, Sasquatch, Feral and Wolfsbane.

Of course, Sabretooth doesn't really play all that well with others and Wolverine ends up chasing him yet again. Their fight continues and eventually takes them to the old Weapon X facility where Wolverine learns yet another snippet of his past that he thought he had already cleared up. It seems that this large lupine leader that appears in his visions has been a part of his life and has been manipulating his actions for a long time. Can Wolverine finally put a stop to Sabretooth's rampage and learn exactly who this mysterious character is? What does Sabretooth mean by his frequent use of the Latin phrase "quod sum eris" (I am what you will be)? Unfortunately, while the fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth does end, it seems this story just helps to add more questions to Wolverine's past and this new figure has only begun to make his presence known.

The DVD contains one special feature, a new interview with Loeb and Bianchi as they discuss not only the creation of this comic series, but also the follow-up that concludes the events started here. The pair not only talks about how they worked out the story and artwork for the comic, but also how they got together and started the collaboration and what they were hoping to get out of it. It's definitely an interesting watch for even the casual comic book fan.

While Marvel Knights Animation Presents: Wolverine Versus Sabretooth seems to only tell half the story, the DVD's special feature showed quite a few animated scenes that are obviously from the follow-up comic that came out several years after this series. Hopefully that means that Marvel Knights Animation is planning on releasing the rest of the story in the future.

Even if they don't wrap up the rest of the story, I found Wolverine Versus Sabretooth to be a good story that animated pretty well. It's always fun to see these two characters clash, but the fact that it teases just a bit more about Wolverine's history makes it something that most fans of this runt will want to watch.
