Resident Evil 7 biohazard: Not a Hero

Just Set Her Down Anywhere:

Resident Evil 7 biohazard: Not a Hero continues from the end of Resident Evil 7, where Chris Redfield gives you a hand up, and then packs you off in a helicopter. You play Chris, after he is done evacuating Ethan. As Chris, your next target is the inventive and deranged Lucas, and of course, you haven’t forgotten about that big Umbrella Corp logo plastered on the outside of the helicopter Chris is flying around in.

Unfortunately, that is a tantalizing beginning for a short DLC that doesn’t answer a lot of questions. Most of the story revelations in this DLC happen in the opening few minutes of cutscene. There’s a company, there’s Lucas, and Chris is a disgruntled Umbrella employee. I was expecting at least the Umbrella connection with Chris to get fleshed out a bit more. We are treated to a pretty hostile and even sarcastic Chris Redfield, however, so there is at least something new there? I mean, the guy has some serious shade for Umbrella (ha).

Not a Hero, Not Redfield Either?:

Resident Evil 7 biohazard: Not a Hero also reminds us that Chris lost his face somewhere between RE6 and RE7. He looks like a completely different person, to the point where you’re constantly listening for clues that this is not the "real" Chris. He is, but the face is so different that it makes you second guess that fact. When you get past the face, you will realize that this is classic Chris. He runs into danger, is loyal to a fault, and has a big old heart of gold.

Gameplay and Looks:

Resident Evil 7 biohazard: Not a Hero gives you a lot of toys and a well-trained Chris. You’ll feel the difference between Chris and Ethan right away. He’s also got his traditional combat knife to round out his arsenal.

Chris once again suffers from a lack of tactical pockets, as you’ll have to juggle lots of items and quick use slots. You’ll have several types of ammo, coins, healing items, guns, and special keys to carry around, and you will need pretty much everything you pick up, especially on higher difficulties.

As far as looks, you can also see the difference in Not a Hero right away. Lucas has lost a lot of his expressiveness in this DLC. The voice acting is still there, but he doesn’t have some of the twitchy facial emotes and there’s something lacking in his eyes. This is free DLC, so it’s not as big of a deal, but it still needs to be mentioned that overall, the look is just below the high standard that RE7 set.

Hero or Not a Hero:

Resident Evil 7 biohazard: Not a Hero has me a little torn. I got some good Chris Redfield lines out of it, but Lucas was lacking something. And I’m a little disappointed in the way Lucas goes down, to be honest. He was so different from his family members, I guess I was expecting different from him. Still, this is a good piece of content that brings some of the old RE into the RE7 world. It’s short, so it’s not a big gamble to download it and restart your game.
