Rumble Rod
Score: 100%
Developer: MadCatz
Device Type: Controller

Function:

The Mad Catz Rumble Rod is a very unique controller. It is designed to resemble a fishing rod, but includes all standard N64 controls. The Rumble Rod has a D-pad controller on the left side, an analog stick on the top, two trigger buttons, an ?A? and ?B? button, and a ?reel-type? control on the right side for reeling in the fish when you catch them. This reel makes fishing games ?hell-a? fun, but turns them into quite a workout.

Performance:

I have to confess; I was never very big on fishing games before I got this controller. However, after playing with the Rumble Rod for a few minutes, I was having the time of my life! Not to mention the fact that even my mother-in-law (not a gamer) got into the action... and had a blast! The only limit to the playability of the Rumble Rod would be the amount of work that goes into using it. Over time, however, your stamina will build up, allowing you to play longer. (And look better in muscle shirts, to boot!)

Since fishing games require more than simply ?fishing,? you would have to know how to play a fishing game before you could use the Rumble Rod. In a similar fashion, it would be best if you had actually used a real fishing rod before. However, supposing you know either sufficiently, you?ll be able to figure out the Rumble Rod in no time flat. Now, actually getting good at catching the fish may take a good bit of practice.

Features:
  • Allows the Force RS and/or RS to be used with the N64
  • Built-In 256K Internal Memory
  • Works in Analog Pedal and Digital Pedal Modes
  • Includes Stickers for Labeling Button Definitions

Drawbacks & Problems::

Batteries. I can only assume it was necessary for the Rumble Rod to take batteries, but it?s always a drawback when a controller requires batteries. Furthermore, the Mad Catz Rumble Rod doesn?t include the necessary AAA batteries in the packaging, so you?ll need to pick up a pair if you want the ultra cool tension effect to operate. Also, it isn?t the best for traveling, so take extra care not to bend the rod itself or damage the reel if you must travel with it.
