Samantha Who?: The Complete Second and Final Season finds Sam flailing about, career-wise, having left the employ of Chapman & Funk. She wants to do something good in the world, but can't seem to find her stride. Throughout the season, she tries different things, one of which is starting a real estate company with her mom, Regina (Jean Smart), although this is most definitely Regina's idea and not Sam's. While she really doesn't like this career move, it does allow her to meet a charming millionaire named Owen, with whom she becomes involved. Owen has become wildly successful through his "green" efforts and this causes Sam to turn her life around, installing a low water usage shower head and working on a park for disadvantaged children. Sam soon finds that this do-gooder life is a bit too much for her and she breaks it off with Owen, only to fall back into step with her billionaire boss, Winston Funk (Billy Zane, but played by Timothy Olyphant last season). Apparently, she and Winston had a torrid affair before her accident and this might have had something to do with her untimely meeting with the front end of a car. By teasing Funk into believing they have a chance to get back together, she is able to convince him to give her the dream job of being in charge of a charitable wing of his company, giving money to those in need. Finally, Sam can do a life of good work, while still making an ungodly amount of money!
One important episode finds Sam taking an experimental drug that causes some of her memories to come back, more specifically, what happened right before her accident and the fact that, at one point, Todd had proposed to her. Naturally, the drug is recalled because it is causing the memories users regain to permanently disappear. Great.
In the meantime, her wacky buddy Dena (Melissa McCarthy) is still continuing her relationship with Chapman and he even proposes! Andrea (Jennifer Esposito), on the other hand, is still deeply immersed in her life of selfishness and uses an old friend of Todd's named Seth (Stephen Rannazzisi) to meet a famous basketball player named Tony Dane. This is a big plot point throughout the season as Andrea builds her relationship with Tony, loving the spotlight of being a sports figure's girlfriend, only to find out Tony is totally gay and their relationship is a front. Things only get better when Tony asks her to marry him and she goes along with the sham because she loves the limelight, knowing that Seth (the basketball team's towel boy) is in love with her and she has very repressed feelings for him as well. Will she go through with the wedding? You'll just have to see for yourself.
Sam's on-again/off-again relationship with Todd (Barry Watson) takes many turns this season as well. He dates other people, as she does also, and when they seem to be growing closer, Winston Funk finagles a dream job for Todd in London, splitting the two of them up. Life just keeps throwing Sam curveballs.
There are a handful of special features in place on the DVD that are fun, but fairly short. There's a behind-the-scenes look with Christina Applegate, a few bloopers and deleted scenes, plus a piece where the three female stars talk about their characters, and finally a piece on Christina's big dance scene in the episode surrounding the dance contest she enters with Regina. I really liked that one because you got to see the full scene, with both good dancing and bad. In the scene, Sam imagines she is dancing really well, but really isn't, so viewers can see it all rather than just the snippet from the episode. I can say that the show does wrap everything up, maybe a little to neatly, but it answers all of viewers' lingering questions and presents the audience with a happy ending. How things wrap up is something fans of the show need to see for themselves, but it's good fun and if you were a fan of Season One, you'll want to see how it all plays out.
