Graphics & Sound:
Unreal’s abundant use of lavish textures eclipses anything I have ever seen in a video game. I am awestruck at the total sense of immersion as I progress through these beautifully rendered environments. Again and again during gameplay, it becomes obvious how the game developers came up with the title. Clever use of lighting, shadows, textures, and last but not least, the remarkable music and sound effects all combine to create an inescapable impression -- This game is UNREAL!

Gameplay:
In Unreal, you are a survivor of a wrecked space craft, who awakens to find herself surrounded by dead shipmates and scenes of carnage. Alone on the ship, you eventually make your way out to a stunningly beautiful planet, inhabited by exotic forms of flora and fauna. Your goal now is to explore your surroundings and try to stay alive, by means of an extremely efficient and varied arsenal of weapons and power-ups, long enough to find a way off the deadly planet. The Player side we’ve seen before. First person shooters, what can you say? Jump in, grab every weapon in sight, shoot first, ask questions later. Or so I thought until I discovered that the four-armed “Nali” creatures would help me if I didn’t kill them. This element, along with a “universal translator” which gives helpful info, serves to speed your progress throughout the game.

Difficulty:
Several difficulty settings make Unreal customizable as far as how easy the enemies are to defeat. But some of the maps can be downright frustrating in that a switch that controls a particular action can be quite distant from the result it creates, keeping you constantly moving to check on possible changes in the environment it may cause. Prepare to explore each map in great detail.

Game Mechanics:
Applause! Applause! What a wonderfully customizable 3D engine! Unreal has more tweaks than a Model-T Ford. If you have a 3D accelerator capable of running Glide, prepare to be blown away. Sound and graphics tweak-ability is excellent, allowing each system to reach its peak potential. Unreal supports Single- or Multiplayer format, though I prefer Single-Player mode so as to more thoroughly experience the graphically rich environments.
