Killzone: Killzone is Coming

For those who may not know, Killzone is a First-Person Shooter by European developer Guerrilla games. Published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Killzone is a squad based first person shooter that takes place in the future on an alien colony that is being overrun by an evil army known as the Helghast. Rather than your typical run and gun FPS like Halo or a detailed tactical shooer like Rainbow Six, Killzone lies somewere in-between. You're not alone in this and running around without thinking will get you killed quickly. Neither do you have direct control over your teammates. Rather, like in real warfare, you must work with others whom you can't control.

It appears you will also be able to select your character before each mission. Since each character plays in considerably different ways, the same mission will play many different ways, and in many circumstances if very much like a totally different mission. The three characters I was able to choose from were Templar, Rico, and Luger. Templar was like your typical FPS hero. A nice blend of utility, speed, and heavy firepower. Rico plays similar, except he moves considerably slower and packs a lot more fire power.

Despite their differences, Templar and Rico played through the demo level pretty similarly. Luger however, was different. Rather than toting alot of heavy firepower, though I did aquire a machinegun and shotgun before the mission was over, Luger specializes in stealth and sneakin. She has infared goggles for seeing in the dark and a silenced pistol and knife for quiet kills. She also diverted from Rico and Templar during the mission and took a seperate path entirely, climbing up ropes and crawling through vents as she killed Helghast from the shadows.

Killzone also featured some typical FPS mechanics. You can jump, many weapons have two modes of fire, you can throw grenades, crouch, and zoom-in. You can pickup health and ammo off fallen enemies, and comrades. When your health gets really low you can rest for a moment and it will slowly go back up to a limited level. Killzone might seem like a typical first-person shooter at first, but with it's high level of polish and interesting storyline I have a feeling we're going to be in for a fun ride when it's finally released.
